Upstairs is a reconstruction of Schutz's studio worth seeing. The comic strip gallery is charming, and the room showing other artists gives good insight into those who were Schultz's influence and inspiration. Jonas is chosen at age 12 for a big job–to be the keeper of his community’s memories from the time before, when people lived differently. Last year, it showed up as a suggestion for me on Amazon, and I learned that since 1993 Lois Lowry had written three more books in the same universe–on a whim, I bought the whole set, but it took me almost another year to get around to reading them.īrief summary of all four books: The Giver is the story of Jonas, who lives in a society where they have removed everything unpleasant–there’s no pain, no sorrow, no anger, but conversely there’s also no real joy or love. At some point, having moved on to more sophisticated dystopias as I got older, it ended up in the giveaway box and I haven’t read it or thought about it in years. Everyone in my class had their own copy so we could follow along, and within a few years my copy was completely dog-eared and tattered, as I read and reread. It was my first exposure to dystopian fiction and I ate it up. I was 11 when The Giver was published, and I remember my 7th grade English teacher, the next year, reading it aloud to my class. 5/20/2023 0 Comments Parallel by lauren millertext request that I “stop by” his house on my way home. (None for me so far-I forced myself to write CAN’T TONIGHT! in response to Michael’s 11:57 p.m. In other words, my room looks exactly the way it did five hours ago when I fell into a food coma after inhaling three slices of double pepperoni on my walk home from Toad’s, the most popular place for Yalies to drink, dance, and make bad decisions. There is a tiny mound of crust crumbs on my floor. The jacket I wore last night is slung over my desk chair. The photograph Marissa gave me for my birthday is on the wall. How long would I keep my eyes shut, waiting for that sound? I haven’t thought through what would happen if I were to wake up somewhere other than this room. And once I hear the garbage truck’s now-familiar beep, I know for certain that it hasn’t. As long as my eyes are closed, I can assume that reality hasn’t changed again. Just my way of preserving the illusion that I am exactly where I was the night before. Like clockwork: the campus garbage truck, backing up to the bins on the other side of the courtyard wall. Daylight is pressing against my eyelids, but I resist the urge to open them. There were a lot of unexpected turns and everything was very much left unresolved which as a teen would have driven me nuts but now I think totally works. Even though I didn't like how the relationships evolved, listening to them evolve was definitely interesting. I loved the friendship between the three of them but it definitely took turns toward what most of us would deem inappropriate (I don't mean inappropriate in terms of age although I suppose most people would think so, I mean inappropriate in terms of whom ended up with whom.) There was so much potential for hurt feelings and disaster but no one seemed to experience anything they couldn't survive. Her curiosity leads her on a journey to try and find out but it's hard to find out what someone doesn't know about themselves.
